METHODS
OF DETERMINING TAX ON BOATS
MIDDLESEX
COUNTY: (as of January 1, 2001)
They
use 80% of low BUC book value, then assess at 35% of that 80%. If boat
cannot be found in the BUC book, they use the NADA Marine Appraisal Guide
or the average retail at 35%. If boat cannot be located in the NADA, they
use the ABOS book at 35% of high trade-in. Tax rate is $3.50 per each
$100.00 of assessed value. Minimum assessment for a boat is $100.00 and
minimum assessment for the motor on the boat is $100.00.

ESSEX
COUNTY:
They
use 90% of BUC book low retail. They assess at 50% of that 90%. Rate is
$3.50 per $100.00 of assessed value.
GLOUCESTER
COUNTY:
Boats
under 5 ton:
Gloucester
uses the NADA blue book. They assess at 40% of low retail. Their rate is
$3.50 per 100.
Boats
over 5 ton:
NADA
book at 50% of high retail. Rate is $1.00 per 100.
KING
AND QUEEN COUNTY:
King
and Queen uses the NADA book low retail. They assess at 100% of value
shown and the rate is $3.94 per $100.00 of assessed value.
LANCASTER
COUNTY:
Lancaster
uses the ABOS book, high retail. They assess at 100% and their rate is
$1.52 per $100.00 of assessed value.
MATTHEWS
COUNTY:
Matthews
uses the BUC book. They add the high retail and low retail together and
then divide to establish an average price. They take 10% off the average
price and assess at 70%. Their rate is $2.14 per $100.00 of assessed
value. Although their primary book is the BUC they use the NADA book if
they cannot find a boat in the BUC book.
YORK
COUNTY:
Under
5 ton:
York
County uses the ABOS book low retail. They assess at 60% and their rate is
$4.00 per $100.00 of assessed value.
Over
5 ton:
They
use the ABOS book low retail, assess at 60% and the rate is $1.00 per
$100.00 of
assessed
